Serve

To serve is part of what it means to be in active faith together at First United Methodist Church.  To do good is part of what God asks of us and part of the Methodist tradition laid out by John Wesley years ago.  See details of our many opportunities for service below.

Service to the church

  • Music

FUMC-West Plains offers a vibrant music ministry, from a full church choir for the Traditional Service at 11:00, to the praise band at the Contemporary Service at 8:30.  Praise God with music either as a full time member of a musical group, or take advantage of seasonal special events such as the Christmas Cantata.

  • God's Crew

God's Crew is an opportunity to love and teach the special needs adults in our community.  These are lovely, loving people eager to hear God's word.

    Opportunities:

    • Bus Ministry: Can you drive a van sometimes on Sunday mornings or Wednesday evenings to bring God's Crew to or from the church? Schedules are flexible, so help out when your schedule permits.
    • Prayers: God's Crew always needs support through your prayer.

Service to the Community

Jesus calls us to care for our neighbors with compassion - feeding the hungry, supporting the needy, and sharing God's love in practical ways.  FUMC offers multiple ways to respond to this call.  If you have a heart for serving others, we'd love to have you join us.

FUMC supports several local shelters and food banks, including Samaritan Outreach Homeless Shelter, First Baptist Church Food Bank, the Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP), Christus Abuse Shelter, Solutes Homeless Shelter, and others.

  • Donations

You can donate to the needy in our area in multiple ways:

     - Donate non-perishable food items.  Bring donations to the church when you come on Sunday, or any other time.  Donations will be distributed according to need.  Please note that donated items can be past their expiration date

     - Donate other items as needed.  Keep an eye on the church bulletin and newsletter for information on special drives for particular needs

     - Financial donations are always appreciated and can be made through the church office

     - Prayers.  Please pray for those in need

Leaders: Ellen Bivens and Wanda Byrd

  • Food Truck

Several of our supported shelters and food banks receive badly needed supplies by way of a monthly food truck.  Can you help us unload this for them?  Contact the church office to volunteer.

  • West Plains elementary food backpacks

  • Jamaica Mission

God asks us, "Who shall I send?"  And so we respond, "Here I am.  Send me."

We join with other churches to go to Falmouth, Jamaica at least once every year to staff a clinic owned by Falmouth Methodist Church.  We supply both doctors and nurses for the clinic, plus also help with construction projects, and some summers we teach Vacation Bible School.  While we're there, we hire local people, who count on us for support.  You can join this joyous and important effort by coming with us, or by contributing financially, or by contributing your prayers.  Send monetary donations to FUMC and label them 'Jamaica Mission'.

We have a special need for a few construction people to join us.
